Work With Offenders - The Choices
Administration Officers work as part of the HM Prison Services to help ensure that procedures, codes, and practices are adhered to properly in prisons and that pre-assigned targets are being met. It is a managerial position: Officers are in charge of the administrative side of the prison they work for and are, in essence, responsible for its performance levels.
Typical activities for an administrative officer include: Providing one-to-one support for lower level managers and other team members and offering training where necessary; producing, maintaining, and updating accurate records and undertaking detailed filing duties; data and trend analysis; liaising with other officers in prisons elsewhere and building upon existing relationships and ensuring complete compliance with all Prison Service Orders.
The position holder needn't necessarily hold relevant qualifications, but experience in a team or offender management setting and helpful related skills are essential. These include strong team skills, written and verbal communications skills, skills of analysis and knowledge of IT systems. He or she should be a bright, confident problem solver with a penchant for offender rehabilitation and related issues.
Qualifications: To GCSE standard or equivalent. An NVQ in business administration level I is a popular, though not obligatory, entry level qualification.
Experience: In an offender management or rehabilitation setting or in a similar team management environment.
Skills: Team work and team building skills, strong IT, written and verbal communication skills, people skills, management skills, problem solving skills, confident phone manner.
