Investigation after man found dead in cell

After being arrested in the Peak District the man was taken into custody but found unresponsive during the night.

An investigation is underway after a man was found dead in his cell in Derbyshire.

The white man in his 50s was arrested in the Peak District at 1.30pm on Wednesday November 23 before being taken to Buxton Police Station.

He was found unresponsive in his cell at 2am the following morning during a check.

Despite officers providing medical assistance and an ambulance attending he was pronounced dead by a paramedic at 2.40am.

Derbyshire constabulary informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission of death shortly afterwards and an investigation was launched.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and a post mortem examination will take place in due course.

IPCC Commissioner Derrick Campbell said: “Our sympathies are with the man’s family and anyone else affected by his death. Our inquiries are obviously at a very early stage and we will be carrying out a very thorough investigation of all the circumstances.”
